Roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally each year, amounting to about 1.3 billion tonnes, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Food waste is responsible for a staggering 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and climate experts have said that reducing food waste is one of the most impactful actions we can all take to address global warming. In the UK alone, over 9.5 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year, almost 3.5 million tonnes of which comes from the hospitality industry.

Woking Borough Council has partnered with Too Good To Go, a social impact company with a simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten and not wasted.

The Too Good To Go app lets restaurants, retailers and producers who have surplus food connect with local consumers. Not only does this reduce the levels of food waste felt by businesses, but it also helps them to recover sunk costs.

Consumers simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses with unsold food. They then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’ of surplus food and collect at an allotted time.

To date, over 4,000 UK businesses have partnered with Too Good To Go, saving over 2 million meals from being thrown away.

The initiative is part of a wider partnership between Woking Borough Council, Too Good To Go, the University of Surrey’s Business School and retail technology start up Near St, to increase footfall in Woking and establish the town as a leading green local shopping destination.
