DA Week hailed a success

This year's Domestic Abuse Awareness Week was hailed a success by the Safer Woking Partnership as almost 3,500 items of awareness raising information were handed out to concerned passers-by during the week-long campaign.

During the week, which ran between 14 and 18 October 2013, Surrey residents were asked to think about their personal relationships in an attempt to spot the signs of a relationship that could turn abusive.

This year's theme was `Healthy Relationships' prompting people to consider the words that best describe their relationship. Descriptions like controlling, dishonest or pressurised can be a sign that the relationship is less healthy and could later involve sexual or physical violence.

The theme was particularly aimed at young people for whom new technology poses an additional threat by enabling perpetrators to control their partners and family members using smart phones and social media.

Cllr Beryl Hunwicks, Woking Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: "It can take courage for someone to consciously make the decision to take advice and information about domestic abuse, so it is heart-warming to know that the teams of dedicated volunteers from the Safer Woking Partners were able to interact and distribute valuable information to those in possible need. I would also like to thank Sainsbury's in Woking Town Centre, Sports Direct, H&M, South West Trains and Woking Shopping for their continued support of Domestic Abuse Awareness Week and we look forward to working positively with them next year."

Events took place across the Borough to raise awareness, not only of the help and support available to victims, but also the advice and information concerned family members, neighbours, close friends or work colleagues can access.
