International women's day calls for the shades of women in Woking
To mark International Women's Day on 8 March 2014, the Equalities team at Woking Borough Council is inviting women who work, live or study in the Borough to submit a piece of writing to build up a picture of `The Shades of Women in Woking'.
The project seeks to celebrate that no one woman is the same and are made up of many different shades - age, ethnicity, education, social background, ability and religion, to name a few. Pieces should reflect on the shades that inspire you and make you who you are - your experiences, talents, frustrations, failures, successes, dreams and aspirations.
Participants should write no more than 500 words, and submissions, which should be received by Friday 28 February 2014, will be made available to read at www.woking.gov.uk/iwd on International Women's Day.
Cllr Melanie Whitehand, Woking Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Accessibility, said: "This is a fantastic way to recognise such an important date in the diary and for those in the Borough, no matter what their background, to come together to create a collection of stories that can be enjoyed by all.
"Throughout history, and even today, women face such hardships and it is important that we realise this, share our experiences and celebrate difference. I would encourage all women to join in and submit a story, to show us what being a woman in 2014 means to you, what we have achieved and what remains to be done to improve the lives of women everywhere."
International Women's Day is celebrated across the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements.
Articles should be emailed to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday 28 February 2014 and, if possible, should include the writer's name, age and where they live. Submissions will be read and a selection shortlisted to feature on Woking Borough Council's website on International Women's Day on 8 March 2014. All those who submit a piece will also be placed in a prize draw for their chance to win £50 worth of Woking Shopping vouchers.
