Following the Prime Minister's announcement about financial support for those affected by the recent floods, Woking Borough Council has confirmed a number of measures that will help support and assist local residents and businesses that were affected.

Council Tax relief

The Council has agreed to grant Council Tax relief to residents whose properties were flooded after 1 December 2013. These households will be granted full relief from all elements (Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey, Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council) of Council Tax for a period of three months from the date of flooding. In addition, they will receive one month's unoccupied property relief from Council Tax, along with ongoing relief on the Borough Council's element of Council Tax until the 31 March 2015 or until the resident moves back into their property.

Business Rates relief

All businesses affected by the floods since 1 December 2013 will receive full relief from Business Rates for three months from the date of flooding to help them get back on their feet.

Repair and Renew Grant

Woking Borough Council will be administering the Coalition Government's Repair and Renew grant. The scheme will operate from 1 April 2014 providing up to £5,000 in grant aid to go towards eligible repairs to flooded households and businesses. The works must improve a property's ability to withstand future flooding.

Business Support Scheme

The Council will also administer the Coalition Government's Business Support scheme. Small to medium-sized businesses adversely affected by the floods since 1 December 2013 can now apply for a grant of up to £2,500. These funds are limited and the amount granted will depend on individual circumstances and overall demand.

Cllr John Kingsbury, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: "The recent floods were the worst to hit Surrey for a generation. While those directly affected in our Borough were thankfully few, I am pleased to announce these measures that will go some way in assisting those residents and businesses to get back on their feet. I would therefore urge those affected to contact us and take advantage of these Government grants and support."

According to the Council's records, 37 residential houses and two businesses in the Borough were affected. These households and businesses are already in contact with the Council.
