The Tour Series is back!

Woking Town Centre, Tuesday 10 June 2014

Get ready for blood, sweat and gears - the Tour Series is back!

The wheels of steel are in motion for the return of the dramatic, high profile, professional cycling races - the men's Pearl Izumi Tour Series and women's Johnson Health Tech Series - to Woking Town Centre for the sixth year running on Tuesday 10 June 2014, along with the return of the much-loved community and business races.

This event offers a unique opportunity for local people, businesses and organisations to enjoy top-level cycling on their doorstep and also capitalise on the increased number of people visiting the town. The action will also be transmitted to hundreds of thousands of spectators by major television broadcaster, ITV4.

From 10am through to midnight on the day of the race, key routes into and around the town will be closed to motor vehicles and diversions put in place, so that the streets of Woking Town Centre can be converted into a high-speed, professional race circuit.

Road closures

From 10am until midnight on Tuesday 10 June 2014, the following roads will be closed to motor vehicles.

  • A320 Guildford Road from the Sovereigns Pub to Lockfield Drive (including Victoria Road).

  • Goldsworth Road from A320 Victoria Way to Coign Church roundabout.

  • Church Road West from Coign Church roundabout to A320 Victoria Way.

Diversion routes will be in place while the road closures are in operation. Lockfield Drive entering the town centre from the west will remain open at all times, giving all-day access to the Shoppers' Car Parks within Peacocks and Wolsey Place Shopping Centres.

The circuit

The professional races will take place in the heart of the town, starting and finishing on Victoria Way, adjacent to Market Square. The riders will make their way under Victoria Arch, up the small hill towards Woking Police Station, around past the Sovereigns Pub and back under Victoria Arch. They will then travel along Goldsworth Road, around past the Coign Church, along Church West Street, left into Victoria Way around a hairpin bend adjacent to Lockfield Drive, and then along a quick straight to the finish line.

The race and riders

The event will involve squads of riders thrashing it around the circuit and reaching top speeds of over 30mph. All of the riders are professionals who get paid to compete in the events in the UK, Europe and further afield.

The professional races are due to begin at approximately 5.30pm with the women's Grand Prix Final. This will be followed by the men's Pearl Izumi Tour Series at 7.30pm.

Community and team races

Following the transformation of the Town Centre's streets into a high-speed, professional race circuit, local school children, residents and businesses will once again have the opportunity to become `Kings and Queens of the road' when the circuit is handed over for the community and team races. The races are scheduled to begin at 1.30pm - for more information about the community and team races, visit www.celebratewoking.info/tourseries

Top tips for businesses

Here are some top tips to help you prepare for and capitalise on one of the biggest sporting events to take place in Woking Town Centre during 2014.

  • Save the date. Ensure that Tuesday 10 June is in everyone's calendar.

  • Have a team talk. If your business or organisation is located within Woking Town Centre, make sure your staff are fully aware of on-the-day road closures and diversions, and encourage them to consider using alternative methods of transport, such as by bike or public transport.

  • Tell people in advance. If you make regular appointments with suppliers (i.e. delivery companies) or customers (i.e. hairdresser, dentist, vet, etc), put a note in your appointment book for 10 June and give people advance notice of the event and road closures.

  • Stand out from the crowd. Last year, around 12,500 people visited Woking Town Centre to watch and take part in the event. You could capitalise on the additional numbers of people visiting the town by decorating the front of shop/ business premises, or running a promotion to attract new customers. You never know, your business could be captured on television!

  • Talk to us. Notify the organisers if you have any concerns about the event. The earlier we know about any potential problems, the sooner we can try and sort them out with you.
