A food-inspired carnival atmosphere will be the order of the day, as Woking's new state-of-the-art covered market is officially opened by the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Tony Branagan, accompanied by Leader of the Council, Cllr John Kingsbury, and Portfolio Holder for Local Markets, Cllr Gary Elson, on Saturday 4 October 2014.
As well as special deals only available on the day, visitors to Woking's newest retail offer will be treated to a cornucopia of family fun with entertainment throughout the day including singing market traders, children's face painting, comedy chefs, and to tempt the taste buds, live cookery demonstrations using the finest fresh produce from Woking's new market.
But visitors don't have to wait until the official opening to see what's in store, as Woking Market has opened to the general public today (Wednesday 1 October 2014). Visitors can discover an exciting mix of permanent quality food and fresh produce stalls while enjoying live musical performances by local artists.
Located along the covered walkway between Jubilee Square and the site of the former Bandstand, recently renamed Market Walk, the stunning new market features 15 purpose-built permanent kiosks featuring a range of quality traders, as well as additional demountable seasonal stalls. While new granite paving and state-of-the-art lighting has created a light, bright and welcoming atmosphere and clutter-free pedestrian route.
Cllr John Kingsbury, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: "Thanks to our continued investment in Woking Town Centre, we have breathed life into a sparse, drab and unoccupied part of the town, transforming it into a bustling, vibrant hub for small traders offering a range of high quality food and produce that will benefit both traders, visitors and above all, Woking."
Cllr Gary Elson, Portfolio Holder for Local Markets, added: "As Portfolio Holder, I am delighted to see that Woking's stunning new covered market is now open. The variety of traders we've been able to attract is testament to the commitment made by the Council to relocate it to the heart of the town centre and provide a vibrant, seven-day-a-week market that compliments Woking existing retail offer."
John-Paul Jackson, Centre Manager for Woking Shopping, added: "The opening of Woking's new market is an exciting addition to the ever improving selection of quality stores within Woking Shopping, and will offer our loyal customers an unrivalled local shopping experience.
