Council encourages entries in inaugural Green Award
Woking Borough Council is sponsoring a new category in the Toast of Surrey Awards 2015 - the Green Award - and is encouraging firms of all sizes to take part in the prestigious county-wide competition, which closes for entries on Friday 12 February.
The Toast of Surrey celebrates the best of local business and, this year, the awards ceremony will be held at the H. G. Wells Conference and Events Centre in Woking. Entries are welcomed from any business that has enjoyed a good year, launched a new product, achieved success in the export market, was active in the community or contributed to improving the environment.
The Council's new Green Award invites entries from businesses across all industry sectors, where innovation, efficiency and sustainability are central to their ethos. Woking Borough Council was one of the first local authorities in the UK to develop a Climate Change Strategy in 2002, resulting in Beacon Status for its adoption of sustainable energy practices and tackling climate change locally, and has introduced a number of transport and energy initiatives since then to help local people and businesses reduce their environmental impact.
Apart from the Green Award, there are a further ten categories in the Toast of Surrey Awards 2015 to choose from, including Director of the Year.
Cllr John Kingsbury, Leader of Woking Borough Council, said: "The Council is looking for organisations that embrace the same principles we advocate in our Climate Change Strategy. Whether it's saving miles travelled by their employees, products or suppliers; reducing their water, energy or waste management bills; or thinking creatively about their own product or service. We want to hear how green technologies are helping their business contribute to a more sustainable future for Woking Borough."
The sponsors of 2015's awards are Woking-based SAB Miller Group, training academy Knights Group, Surrey Chambers of Commerce, service provider Ramsac, the Institute of Directors, Surrey County Council, Surrey Business School, Woking Borough Council, and the Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
