Woking Wins Big at Surrey Life Food and Drink Awards

Woking raised a glass to the best of its food and drink producers at this year’s Surrey Life Food and Drink awards this week as three local businesses were crowned category winners, with a further five highly commended.

Launched in 2013, the Surrey Life Food and Drink awards recognises and rewards the great and good of the area’s thriving food and drink scene. From rewarding excellence in customer service, to celebrating leading sustainability initiatives and local artisan talent, the awards shine a light on outstanding local businesses that are putting Woking on the map as a vibrant food destination.

Woking foodie favourite Boz’s Fruit & Veg shop was top of the pile as deserving winner of the Customer Service Award having expertly navigated the Covid-19 pandemic to keep supplying the local community with the freshest, quality fruit and veg, while Deli Class in Horsell was crowned the Best Independent Food & Drink Retailer for its authenticity and dedication to producing simple, fresh dishes that really pack a flavour punch.

The Sustainability Initiative Award, sponsored by #WeAreWoking, went to Woking’s own Good Living Brew Co, famed for its flagship Binary Botanical, a home-brewed, healthier and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional beer. The accolade comes after the beer was recently heralded Best Infusion or Botanical Drink at the coveted World Beverage Innovation Awards 2020.

Eden Greens Urban Farm in Woking, a family-run urban farm was also highly commended in the sustainability category. Offering healthy, organic food for the Surrey community and local restaurants, Eden Greens Urban Farm specialises in microgreens grown without chemicals.

Highly Commended recognitions were served up to Boz’s Fruit & Veg shop in Woking (Best Independent Food & Drink Retailer) and Horsell favourites Prince & Sons Family Butchers (Butcher of the Year), Goldfinch Kitchen (Food Producer of the Year) as well as Thurstons Brewery (Drink Producer of the Year).

The accolades are testament to Woking’s thriving business community and reflects the area’s diverse food and drink credentials.

Cllr. Ayesha Azad, Leader of Woking Borough Council said:

“Our local food and drink producers are the bread and butter of Woking’s community and I’m delighted that so many of our fantastic businesses have been recognised within these prestigious awards after what has been a very challenging year.

“Throughout the pandemic, these businesses really stepped up to be local heroes within the community and continue to do great work to celebrate the provenance of Woking’s fantastic food and drink scene whilst leading the way in driving excellence in the sector.

“In these difficult times it’s more important than ever to help our local businesses not only survive, but to thrive. I hope this success will provide them with encouragement and the recognition they deserve for being among the very best food and drink producers in the UK. We should be very proud of our incredible homegrown local businesses.”

The award winners were announced via an online ceremony on Wednesday 25th November.
