Female Focus - Be the role model
Welcome to the NatWest Getty Images collection – an inspirational series of profiles and images helping to change the visual perception of female-run businesses.
Covid-19 has resulted in one of the toughest operating periods for businesses in recent years, and has disproportionately affected female entrepreneurs. Women are more likely to work for businesses in industries that have been hit hard by the pandemic and will typically bear more of the burden of childcare throughout periods of lockdown. Without intervention, Covid-19 could become another barrier that prevents women from starting their own businesses.
As identified in the Rose Review of Female Entrepreneurship, another reason some women hold back from starting and growing a business is because they don’t see role models like themselves. Female entrepreneurs are pioneering in industries as diverse as gaming, agriculture, technology and engineering – but if you believe what you see in generic business imagery, you could be forgiven for thinking female business owners are all cast from one mould.
This is one of the reasons why NatWest and Getty Images have partnered to launch a nationwide campaign and competition to tackle stereotypes of female founders and help create a more inclusive visual landscape that shows entrepreneurs as they really are. From gin distillers, to metalworkers, to nutritionists, we spoke to inspiring women from across the UK to find out what a female founder really looks like.
