Surrey’s green business awards finalists named

CREST22 Business Awards today unveiled this year’s finalists, shortlisting blue chip corporations such as McLaren Applied to small sole traders.

In a list of businesses from one of the UK’s most thriving economies, the finalists include McLaren Applied, the technology and research company that recently became independent of the supercar and motorsport McLaren Group, to speciality coffee roaster Chimney Fire Coffee.

With entries from some of the UK’s greenest businesses operating in Surrey, judges admitted that the standard was so high that in one category, Sustainability Impact they selected six instead of the normal three finalists.

Surrey’s green business awards are being held on Thursday 19 May, at the WWF UK headquarters in Woking when the winners of the five categories will be announced alongside the judges’ choice of the 2022 Sustainability Hero.

The five categories Efficiency Champion, Transforming Food, Going Circular, Smarter Transport and Sustainability Impact.

  • Sustainability Impact: The Light Box, Bare & Fair, Croydon Gymnastics, Clandon Wood Burial Ground, Goldsworth Road Dental Centre, Switchfoot Wealth

The free-to-enter awards run in association with the University of Surrey and working with Headline Sponsor Surrey County Council to showcase environmentally sustainable businesses in Surrey are now in their second year. The event hosted by CREST22 sponsors the WWF, includes a showcase of some of the region’s sustainable businesses during a drinks reception from 4pm ahead of the awards presentation which starts at 5pm. Underlining the importance of the CREST Awards programme, one of this year’s judges, Prof. Richard Murphy of the University of Surrey’s CES, says: “Facing up to the climate crisis and the urgent need for nature recovery in the UK opens up great opportunities for innovators in business. We at CES are working with leading companies to seize these opportunities, and our support for the CREST awards reflects our commitment to helping shape a dynamic sustainable economy in Surrey."

Joanna Yarrow, one of the UK's leading experts in sustainable living, former Head of Global Sustainability for IKEA and founding partner of M&C Saatchi LIVE, once again will be hosting the presentations and leading an exciting panel of presenters at CREST22 Awards. They include Andrew Griffiths, Director of Community and Partnerships at Planet Mark & Chair of the Institute of Director's National Sustainability Taskforce, Cllr Marisa Heath, Cabinet Member for Environment for Surrey County Council and Ian Christie, Fellow/Senior Lecturer, Social Science of Sustainability, University of Surrey.

Cllr Heath, says: “The CREST awards are a great initiative to shine a light on the fantastic work Surrey businesses are doing to reduce their carbon footprint. Supporting the green economy in Surrey is an essential part of helping us achieve our aim of being a net zero carbon county by 2050.”
